Thoughts on the Plot

The beginning of this book is a little rough. Emotionally, Thea is going through it and she’s pretty much dragging the plot along with her. 

I do wish the pacing was a bit better, but that’s a gripe with this whole series rather than just this book. 

This book, however, is by far my favorite of the series. 

I will also say, I kinda wish I had read Slaying The Shadow Prince prior to this one because holy SPOILERS.

I do wish a bit more had happened. A lot of what happened in the middle of the book felt more like preparation and could have 100% been shaved down a bit. 

The ending was what sold me on Thea. I love her character development and the proof that she is as strong as she always knew she was. 

Something I have come to really enjoy in this series is the build-up. It never falters, and somehow the author manages to just keep upping the tension and I love it. 

Thoughts on the Characters

Wilder was extremely frustrating in this book, especially in the first half. 

There were a lot of communications issues in this book. Both Thea and Wilder are wildly stubborn and so neither can understand how the other can’t see it from their point of view. 

And like I get it. But Wilder (imo) was once in Thea’s shoes and should have been the one to help her understand rather than acting like an idiot.

Thea deserved his patience and understanding. Her whole world was turned upside down. It gave “IC treating Nesta like garbage in Silver Flames” if I am being honest and I strongly disliked it for Thea. 

Something I also very much hated –

*SPOILER AHEAD*

Why, WHY did Thea lose her power only to have it come back while she was doing the nasty with Wilder? 

Like why was her power tied to him? Why could Wren and Anya not help Thea? Especially considering her power is by birthright, I don’t know. It’s like the feminism left the author’s brain while writing that scene.

Anyway, like I said. I really loved Thea’s evolution in this book and it is probably why it is my favorite. 

Cal and Kipp’s unwavering loyalty just reminds me of how much I love them and why they will always be my favorite side characters. 

The new characters we meet are an interesting bunch and we get to see Thea’s found family grow a little larger. 

Wren struggles a bit in this one, especially with Anya around a lot more. I did want more sister bonding, though. 

It felt like the romance between Thea and Wilder came first before much else. 

Overall Thoughts

Despite my little gripes with the book here and there, this is truly my favorite book in the series. 

The beginning is a bit rough to get through, but my gods, the ending with Thea and the Great Rite was the absolute perfect way to end this book. I would have been happy if we skipped over the war and ended with the Great Rite. 

The empowerment of Thea’s character felt so right. 

While I do think the romance could have taken a bit of a backseat because I wanted more sister bonding and fantasy elements, I do love Wilder and Thea. 

I 100% recommend reading the series in this order:

1. Blood & Steel
2. Vows & Ruins
3. Slaying The Shadow Prince
4. Fate & Furies
5. Shadow & Storms

This is primarily because I now pretty much can read Slaying The Shadow Prince and feel none of the tension or worry because I know how all the characters end up and pretty much what happens. 

If you don’t care about spoilers or have no interest in Talemir (but considering he’s a shadow daddy, I beg you to reconsider), then you can skip right over Slaying The Shadow Prince and remain in The Legends of Thezmarr world. 

A solid 4.5 stars out of 5 stars.
