Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag 2024

I’ve watched and read my fair share of mid year book freak out tags and I am so excited to do one of my own this year! I’ve hit a bit of a reading slump in June, so my reading has slowed down a bit over the last few weeks. So far I have read 18 books so far and I’ve enjoyed a lot of what I read so I have no complaints.

After some digging, Ely created the original mid year book freak out tag. I won’t be answering all the questions, but if you’re curious, she has all the questions listed in her description.

So let’s dive in!

Best Book you’ve read so far this year

Absolutely hands down my favorite book so far of 2024 is A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen. This book is equal parts fantasy and romance. I listened to this book as an audiobook and absolutely LOVED the narrator as much as I did the story itself.

10/10 would recommend.

Best sequel you’ve read so far this year

That definitely goes to The Ever Queen by LJ Andrews. I was so excited for this book after The Ever King and I promise, it did not disappoint! I read a lot of subpar sequels in 2023 so this sequel felt like a breath of fresh air.

If you haven’t read The Ever Seas series, what are you waiting for?

Honorable mention: Vows & Ruins by Helen Scheurer. I have completely fallen in love with this series and this sequel did so much more than live up to its potential and even though I had some gripes *way too much spice* I genuinely enjoyed this sequel as well.

New release you haven’t read yet but want to

If I am being honest, Powerful by Lauren Roberts. This story focuses on Adena and from the reviews, its pure heartbreak. I started it but only got to about 10% in and I want to read this book before reading Reckless. But I’m struggling! Lauren Roberts isn’t one of my favorite authors when it comes to writing style, but I hope to read this one soon!

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

Do I have to pick just one?

If so, Wisteria by Adalyn Grace is my next most anticipated read by far. It publishes in August of this year and I am just counting down the days!

Honorable mentions: Throne of Secrets by Kerri Maniscalco, which is not our Pride, Lucia, and Vittoria love triangle but rather focuses on Gluttony! As well as The Songbird & The Heart of Stone by Carissa Broadbent which focuses on our sweet Mische.

Biggest Disappointment

Please don’t come for me with this one, but Lore of the Wilds by Analeigh Sbarra. This book promised so much but delivered it in such a messy package.

This book felt like ordering a pizza and opening the box to discover the delivery guy dropped it because the pizza is upside down with cheese and toppings all askew.

I wanted to love this, but I just couldn’t.

The same also goes for The Witch Collector by Charissa Weaks. After seeing a comment saying this book would be the next ACOTAR, I now have severe trust issues.

Biggest surprise

Heartless Hunter by Kristen Cicarelli took me by quite the surprise.

I sampled the audiobook from my library and enjoyed listening to the narrator so I decided to borrow it. Not even knowing how obsessed I would become with this story and these characters.

I absolutely cannot wait for the second book and continuation of this series!

Favorite new author

Without a doubt Helen Scheurer! If she writes it, I’m reading it. The Legends of Thezmarr series is my current romantasy obsession!

Any author who can write side characters that hilariously funny, has instantly won my heart. (Oh and Thea/Wilder aren’t too bad either.)

Newest fictional crush

Okay if you read The Legends of Thezmarr you’re gonna be looking at me sideways, but Torj Elderbrock has me raising eyebrows and eagerly awaiting what else is in store as I am pretty sure the continuation of stories with these characters may perhaps focus on Torj as a potential love interest.

I also still think about Irian (aka shadow daddy #16) from A Feather so Black by Lyra Selene quite often. Yes it’s because he’s a shadow daddy but I also really loved his story with Fia.

Newest favorite character(s)

110% Cal and Kipp from The Legends of Thezmarr series. These two had me laughing (sometimes quite loudly) throughout the series.

A book that made you cry

Okay so I am not a book sobber. It takes quite a lot to make tears roll down my face while I am reading. The last book to actually make me cry while reading was A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas.

If I had to pick one that came close, it would be Fates & Furies by Helen Scheuer. The ending scene with Thea and her strength during the end of the book had me in an emotional chokehold.

Book that made you happy

The Ever Queen by LJ Andrews because this book wraps up Erik and Livia’s duology and it was just so sweet I have a cavity from it.

As well as Half A Soul by Olivia Atwater. I really enjoyed this one and find it to be quite underrated. It is definitely not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I very much enjoyed the story and how it ended.

Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

By far my Barnes & Noble exclusive editions of Foxglove by Adalyn Grace and Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett.

I also do just want to note I am not someone who purposely buys special copies or editions. These two happened to be on sale when my local store was having a closing sale because they are moving locations and I got really lucky.

I’m gonna skip over the next two.

(What books do you need to read by the end of the year? & Favourite Book Community Member)

Primarily because my tbr is embarrassingly long and also because I am still getting to know others in the book community as a creator instead of a viewer and so I think its too early to start calling out names.

But I am very much looking forward to growing further within the book community and hopefully next year having some online book friends to tag in this tag.

That’s about it for this one. This tag was so much fun to participate in this year and if you’ve participated, let me know how you’re reading is going so far this year.
