The Complete Belladonna Series – Overview & Review

The Belladonna series is a three book, YA gothic romance, dark fantasy series. With a sprinkling of paranormal. The series focuses on a pair of cousins, Signa and Blythe. 

Signa Farrow is an orphan again and again, before finally being placed with the Hawthornes. Blythe Hawthorne is the girl with the unexplained illness, who keeps seeming to defy her fate.

Together, Signa and Blythe form a formidable pair. Alongside Sylas/Death and Aris/Fate.

In the introduction to this series, we meet our main character, Signa Farrow. Signa’s parents died tragically when she was an infant and then bounced around from family member to family member. The only problem was each family member meeting an untimely death not long after Signa’s arrival. 

Eventually, she ends up with the elusive Hawthorne’s at Thorn Grove. An estate dark and atmospheric, and bursting at the seams with secrets. 

Along the way, Signa forms a close alliance with Death, the thorn in her side, as they work together to solve the biggest mystery at Thorn Grove.

I listened to the audiobook version of Belladonna and instantly fell in love. The setting is so atmospheric and Adalyn Grace has a way of pulling you in right from the start with her writing. 

I loved Signa and Death’s relationship, as well as the relationship Signa forms with Blythe. 

The mystery added nicely to the plot, and this book does end on a cliffhanger, but can definitely be read as stand-alone if you’re not interested in continuing the series. 

A perfect 5 out of 5 stars. 

Foxglove by Adalyn Grace

In the sequel to Belladonna, questions have been answered, but thanks to the cliffhanger, now Signa and Blythe are facing another huge obstacle. 

Blythe’s father has been accused of murder, and Death’s brother Fate shows up, convinced that Signa is his late wife, Life. 

This book splits its POV between both Blythe and Signa, and the introduction of Fate brings with it an interesting backstory for some of our characters. 

We are also introduced to Foxglove, Signa’s late parent’s seaside estate. 

I missed the relationship between Death and Signa in this book. Because we get Blythe’s POV and the introduction of Fate, there is far more going on. 

As well as Elijah’s trial and Blythe dealing with another secret involving her brother bubbling to the surface. 

Foxglove, if you pay attention, really sets up the third book. 

In Belladonna, we start solely with Signa’s POV. In Foxglove, we are getting two POVs with two different pairings. 

The sequel wasn’t 100% up my alley, but it was still a strong sequel and held its own.

The third and final book in the series centers on Blythe and her relationship with Aris/Fate. 

Both find themselves in a less than ideal situation. Despite their initial dislike for each other, Blythe’s illness comes back, and we meet Chaos. 

The unnerving demon capable of causing great loss in the world when balance is upended. And that is what Blythe has somehow managed to do, upset the balance. 

With Death and Fate having both previously dealt with Chaos, they understand the urgency better than anyone in returning balance to the universe. 

Signa is also on her own journey to uncover who murdered her parents when she was just a baby. 

While the series strayed further and further away from Signa and Sylas/Death, I found that Blythe and Aris/Fate genuinely began to grow on me. 

I found myself rooting for them and was eager to see how everything would end. 

The ending of this book and series was a bittersweet one and I am so sad this story is over. 

Though I do wish the ending was a bit longer, or the author had given us an epilogue.

A solid 4.5 stars out of 5 stars.

A few other notes for the series. I strongly dislike that this is classified as YA. While the spice is not overly explicit, there is a small amount of spice in each book. 

I do love the gothic romance elements and the added paranormal elements. 

These books are incredibly atmospheric, and I really like Adalyn Grace’s writing. 

These books all balance plots and characters really nicely. I loved both Blythe and Signa’s development as characters, but also their relationship with each other. 

Though, I do not know what time period this book might have been set in, but I got major Bridgerton vibes when it came to society and the season. 

I also should warn you that the cliffhanger in Foxglove is nothing compared to the cliffhanger in Belladonna, but you’re in luck because all three books are now published. 

As for a series rating, a solid 4.75 stars out of 5 stars for the series as a whole because while I do have some small gripes within each book, I genuinely love this series and will recommend it all the time.
